What Are Dental Veneers?

Dental Veneers

Dental veneers are custom-made, wafer-thin shells that are cemented onto the surface of natural teeth. They are used to change the appearance of one’s smile, either by altering the shape, size, color or length of teeth, depending on the specific aesthetic needs and desires of the patient.

Are veneers right for me?

Dental veneers can be beneficial for anyone seeking to alter the appearance of their teeth. During your initial consultation, Dr. MacPherson will determine whether or not you are a candidate for the procedure, as well as whether or not veneers are the optimal solution for you based on your unique dental needs.

Veneers May Be Used To Treat Teeth Which Are:

  • Discolored
  • Chipped or broken
  • Worn down
  • Misaligned
  • Uneven
  • Misshapen
They may also be used to close gaps between teeth or alter the appearance of teeth that have received root canal treatment, large resin fillings, or are stained from tetracycline treatment.

Placement Process

If veneers are determined to be the best option for you, they can be custom tailored and placed in just a couple of visits. During your initial consultation, x-rays, photos and dental impressions may be taken to assess the current state of your teeth. These are then used to create the custom design of your veneers in a laboratory. While you await your final dental restoration, a thin layer of enamel is removed from the surface of your teeth in preparation for the placement of your veneers.

Once your custom porcelain or composite resin veneers are created, your teeth are thoroughly cleaned, polished, and etched to promote a stronger bond. We will ask for your approval of the appearance of the veneers before they are bonded using a special dental cement and cured using a special light.

How Do I Care For Them?

Caring for dental veneers is much like caring for your natural teeth. Brushing well twice a day along with regular flossing, rinsing, and dental checkups ensure the lasting health and quality of your new smile.

With proper care and treatment, dental veneers can last 5 to 10 years or more! They will need to replaced over time.
